These Castle Walls

Dark clouds and the frozen crowds block the light from the city
The "gotta owns" and the bitter groans conspire to hide the needy
Tears like rain fall in vain

"Give us more" is the song that soars; the wealthy man's lament
The heartless throng and the angst of the young leave no room for content
Tears like rain fall in vain

While we run around and trample those who crawl
Our ears are deafened to a broken world that calls
But are we really safe behind these castle walls that we build?

Passers-by all avert their eyes with a cold indifference
Too busy with their own comfort to give the deprived a second glance
Tears like rain fall in vain
